Introduction:

“Church, today we delve into a different aspect of Abraham’s story—his prosperity and influence. Often, when we think of Abraham, we focus on his faith and obedience. But Scripture also highlights his wealth and leadership, and how he used them to glorify God. Open your Bibles to Genesis 13 and Genesis 24, and let’s explore how Abraham’s material blessings were a tool for fulfilling God’s purposes.”

Exposition:

Abraham’s Prosperity (Genesis 13:1–18):

“In Genesis 13, we find Abraham returning from Egypt, where God had blessed him with great wealth—flocks, herds, and silver. His prosperity created a challenge:

‘The land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together’ (Genesis 13:6).

This abundance led to conflict between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. But notice how Abraham handles the situation. With wisdom and humility, he says to Lot:

‘Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives’ (Genesis 13:8).

Abraham allows Lot to choose first, demonstrating generosity and trust in God’s provision. Lot chooses the fertile plains near Sodom, but Abraham’s wealth and integrity remain under God’s blessing. In verses 14–18, God reaffirms His promise to Abraham, saying:

‘All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.’

Abraham’s actions show us that wealth is not an end in itself but a means to honor God and maintain peace.”

Abraham’s Leadership and Influence (Genesis 24:1–9):

“Now turn to Genesis 24. As Abraham nears the end of his life, his focus shifts to securing a godly future for his family. In verse 1, we read:

‘The Lord had blessed Abraham in every way.’

But Abraham’s wealth wasn’t his legacy—his faith and leadership were. He sends his servant to find a wife for Isaac, giving clear instructions to ensure that his son’s future aligns with God’s promises. Abraham says in verse 7:

‘The Lord, the God of heaven, who brought me out of my father’s household and my native land and who spoke to me and promised me on oath, saying, “To your offspring I will give this land”—he will send his angel before you.’

Abraham’s leadership here is marked by faith, integrity, and a deep understanding of his responsibility to guide his family toward God’s purposes.”

Themes:

1. Wealth as a Blessing:

“Church, Abraham’s story reminds us that wealth is not inherently good or bad. It is a blessing from God and a tool for His purposes. Abraham used his resources to resolve conflicts, maintain peace, and secure his family’s future in alignment with God’s will. Wealth, when surrendered to God, can be a powerful instrument for blessing others and advancing His kingdom.”

2. Leadership:

“Abraham exemplifies godly leadership in both his household and his dealings with others. He leads with wisdom, generosity, and trust in God. His focus is not on accumulating riches but on fulfilling God’s promises and preparing the next generation to walk in faith.”

Application:

“Church, how does this apply to us today?

First, we must recognize that all we have—our wealth, talents, and resources—comes from God. Like Abraham, we are stewards, not owners. Are we using what God has given us to glorify Him and bless others?

Second, we are all leaders in some capacity. Whether it’s in our families, workplaces, or communities, we are called to lead with wisdom and integrity. Abraham shows us that true leadership involves prioritizing God’s will and preparing those we lead to carry His promises forward.”

Discussion Questions:

1. “How did Abraham use his wealth for God’s glory? What lessons can we learn from his generosity and trust in God’s provision?”

2. “How can we view wealth as a blessing and use it to serve God? What practical steps can we take to ensure our resources are used for His purposes?”

Closing Challenge:

“Church, Abraham’s prosperity and influence were tools for advancing God’s plan. His life challenges us to view our blessings—whether great or small—as opportunities to serve God and others. Let us leave here today with a renewed commitment to steward our resources wisely and to lead with faith and integrity, just as Abraham did.

Let’s pray together.”
